About Tommy & the scholarships

Tommy Wong’s leadership and volunteerism helped bring the original eight pickleball courts to life—a foundation for today’s thriving Surprise community.

For 10 years, SPA awarded four annual scholarships in Tommy’s memory. Community support later helped increase that total to six, with a goal to continue growing the program through fundraising and the memorial tournament.

Formats

Divisions 3.0 through 4.5 used round robin play. The 5.0 division used double elimination when at least seven teams entered.

Bracket sizes & targets

• Eight or more round-robin teams: divided into pools, with one game to 15, win by two against every pool opponent.
• Fewer than eight: standard round robin with targets published by bracket.
• Tie-breaks followed IFP guidelines.

Playoffs & medals

• Top two teams from each pool advanced.
• Semi-final winners moved to medal matches.
• Bronze: one game to 15, win by two.
• Gold: best two-of-three games to 11, win by two.

IFP tie-breakers

• Head-to-head matches won
• Total point differential
• Head-to-head point differential
• Point differential against the next-highest team

Player responsibility

Singles registration required completed registration and payment. For doubles, both partners had to register and pay. Teams with an incomplete partner registration could be moved to the waitlist.
